The Cheapest European Airports for Budget Travel (2026)

Where to fly 590 words Updated July 2026

Ten European airports where the combination of low fares, cheap ground transport, and good LCC frequency makes the most budget-friendly base for Europe.

How we picked these airports

We weighted three factors: (1) average one-way LCC fare to nearby capitals, (2) cost and frequency of public ground transport to the city centre, and (3) the number of distinct budget carriers operating from the field. Airports tied to a single carrier (Ryanair-only or Wizz-only) score worse on flexibility, even if individual fares are low.

London Stansted (STN)

Stansted is the European volume hub for Ryanair, with 200+ destinations and routine sub-EUR 30 fares to the continent. The Stansted Express to Liverpool Street is GBP 20.70, but the National Express coach to Victoria is GBP 8 if you have time. Bag-fee enforcement is strict; the gate sizer is real. Best base for Eastern and Southern Europe on a budget.

Berlin Brandenburg (BER)

BER has rebuilt itself as a major LCC base with easyJet, Ryanair, and Wizz Air all running heavy schedules. The Airport Express train to central Berlin runs every 30 minutes at EUR 4.40. Berlin's overall low cost of living makes it cheap to stay before or after a flight; ideal for hopping into Poland, the Baltics, and Scandinavia.

Krakow John Paul II (KRK)

KRK is one of the cheapest cities to overnight in Europe. Wizz and Ryanair both fly heavy schedules to Western Europe. The airport train to Krakow Główny is PLN 17 (about EUR 4) and runs every 30 minutes. Combined LCC frequency means lots of flexible same-day pivots if a flight is cancelled.

Bucharest Otopeni (OTP)

OTP serves Wizz Air's largest Eastern European base. Fares to Italy, Spain, the UK, and Germany are routinely the cheapest on the continent. Bus 783 runs 24/7 to central Bucharest for RON 8 (~EUR 1.60). Cheap city, cheap food, cheap onward flights.

Athens Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH)

Athens has surged as a budget base with Ryanair, Wizz Air, Aegean (now competitive on basic fares), and Sky Express running heavy schedules. The Metro Line 3 to Syntagma is EUR 9. Greek domestic LCC fares to islands are some of the cheapest in Europe in shoulder season.

Milan Bergamo (BGY)

BGY is Ryanair's largest Italian base. Fares from BGY to Eastern Europe and Iberia frequently dip below EUR 25. The Orio Shuttle to Milano Centrale is EUR 10 and takes 50 minutes. Lower hotel prices in Bergamo than central Milan if you stay near the airport.

Budapest Ferenc Liszt (BUD)

Budapest has heavy Wizz, Ryanair, and easyJet activity with consistently low fares to UK, Italy, and Germany. The 100E shuttle bus to Deák Ferenc tér is HUF 2200 (~EUR 5.60). Cheap hotels and excellent food make BUD a good 2-night layover.

Porto Francisco Sá Carneiro (OPO)

Porto is Ryanair's largest Iberian base outside Spain. Metro Line E direct to São Bento or Trindade is EUR 2.85. Fares to Northern Europe and the UK are routinely under EUR 35. A genuinely under-priced gateway compared to Lisbon.

Riga (RIX)

RIX is airBaltic's main hub plus serves Ryanair and Wizz. Bus 22 to central Riga is EUR 2 and runs 24/7. The Baltic LCC scene is thinner than Western Europe, but RIX is the cheapest reliable base for the region.

Sofia (SOF)

Sofia has rapidly grown Wizz Air and Ryanair service with rock-bottom fares to Italy, Germany, the UK, and the Middle East. Metro Line 1 to Serdika is BGN 1.60. Among the very cheapest European countries to overnight in.

How to use a budget hub effectively

Pick a single hub, fly in on a flexible ticket, and pivot from there. Two one-way LCC tickets via a budget hub are routinely cheaper than a single full-service round-trip, provided you allow at least 3 hours between separate-ticket connections and check bags only on legs you have already paid for.
